Only a small percentage of chromosomal changes occur regularly. A distinction is made between numerical and structural chromosomal changes. With numerical chromosomal changes, a chromosome can be absent (monosomy), there can be an extra copy of a chromosome (trisomy) or multiple extra chromosomes (polyploidies).
